YOUTH and ROLEMODELS

How would you describe your youth, did you have a role model growing up?

My youth was pretty “normal” before my teens, boy scouts, obsessed with Gremlins, rollerblading, making videos with Star Wars toys, my “talkboy”, stretch arm strong and other nostalgia. But my teens, which I count as my youth were definitely out there…which is explained by my first queer character answer below.

Do you remember your first crush?

My first crush was a very pretty girl called Mia. I even named my guinea pig after her – Miffy Mia.

What advice would you give your adolescent self?

“Stop trying to grow up so fast. Be present. If you’re going to bleach your hair, get a professional.”

How was your relationship with health and fitness growing up?

I wasn’t the sportiest but I did run a lot and even started working out at the gym at a young age. I just didn’t really know what I was doing. And though my Mum cooked me healthy food, once I left the nest and went to College, I was not healthy. It’s only been in the last five years that I’ve really focused on health and fitness.

What was the first movie with a queer character that impacted you?

I’m going to cheat here and say queer tv character as “Nathan”, from Queer As Folk, the British version had a huge effect on me. I pretty much mimicked him and started going to the only gay bar (The Cosmopolitan – which no longer exists) on the island I grew up on (Jersey, Channel Islands, UK) at age 15 and hanging out with a much older crowd. I’d be sitting a party, youngest in the room by far, doing magic mushrooms and listening to Sonique.

“I was told by a publicist I worked with to not talk about being gay as well as an openly gay producer, who told me I shouldn’t come out.”

ARTISTRY

Sharing stories and being able to expose people to new point of views is a powerful tool, is this something that inspired you to pursue acting and screenwriting?

It wasn’t when I started, I just wanted to act and be on TV but now that I’ve grown up and acting is such a huge part of my life, it’s become much bigger than just me. Now I’m selective in the stories I want to tell and the characters I want to play because I really can expose people to points of view, or help people feel less alone or inspired.

Where do you draw your creative inspiration from?

My creative inspiration often comes from researching topics, people, places, oddities that I find intriguing and then writing a script of some sort whether it be a play or screenplay around those ideas. I watch tons of tv and movies, always reading something and constantly seeing my talented friends do things so currently I don’t find it hard to get inspired.

Who would be your pipe dream on screen romance?

I wouldn’t be opposed to…Tilda Swinton.

Are there many actors you know of who are still closeted and what challenges do you think these actors face in being able to live an authentic life?

Absolutely…not to be all me me me but I was told by a publicist I worked with to not talk about being gay as well as an openly gay producer, who told me I shouldn’t come out. Sadly other markets in the world are not as liberal as the USA and UK and hence there are so many gay actors who are still in the closet. They are directed by the industry to never come out and lead a secret life. I think this is representative of where we are still at but fortunately there are a lot of younger gay actors paving the way for future generations.

Chest day or leg day?

Fortunately my chest develops easily so gotta do that leg day!

“Stop trying to grow up so fast. Be present. If you’re going to bleach your hair, get a professional.”

FUTURE

What have you learnt about yourself this year?

I’m not the person I used to be. I’ve grown, got my shit together, work hard and learning to love myself and life more and more each day. Namaste 😉

Are there any young actors or writers that excite you for the future?

Patrick Reaily (Dating My Mother), Paul Ianaco, Cole Escola, Timothée Chalamet.

Goals for 2018?

Get my short, Class A, into festivals. Start working on my feature. Act in a bunch of TV shows/Films. Collaborate with great Directors. Get more involved politically, creating positive change.

Do you have any future projects that you can tell us about?

Yes, currently I’m in pre production for a short I’m directing. A 9 minute Short Film that follows three LGBTQ addicts as they battle their chosen drug, personified in the flesh. I am honored to have partnered with the non-profit charity, Gay and Sober, to produce a film that will raise awareness for addiction in the LGBTQ community.
