Dressed up for interviews and meetings today, brand loyalty game meta af; also — #AStarIsBornMovie was epic. Cried (bliss, love, sadness) for like 50% of the film. Mom’s perfomance is immense. Narrative parallels between her life and the script are so intricate/clever and the shots/directing but also #BradleyCooper’s perfomance were on point. A movie to be grateful for // @ladygaga #ASTANISBORN
“I am the biggest stan of anyone that expresses themselves authentically. It makes no difference what type of artist or what size you are, it’s about what you represent.” Multi-Disciplinary political artist, NEO 10Y talks queer artists, self-actualisation and new tracks: DOPAMINE and POEMS TO FUCK TO.
DOPAMINE and POEMS TO FUCK TO
Past work, in particular, “The Kid That Killed Tr*mp,” polarised audiences, resulting in death threats, FBI reports and the video going viral. Do you expect to receive a polemic reaction for Dopamine and Poems To Fuck To?
I don’t want my work to be polarising this time. Dopamine is really a track for everyone. It’s about finding yourself, so that we can find world peace, collectively through group consciousness. I guess that I am flip fucking a mannequin bust, but that is actually meant to be an expression of self love in the visual. I don’t think it will be polarising!
As a political performance artist, are you inspired by the success of less mainstream queer artists, Kevin Abstract and Héloïse Letissier discussing gender fluidity, queer life and vulnerability?
I am the biggest stan of anyone that expresses themselves authentically. It makes no difference what type of artist or what size you are, it’s about what you represent. We are in a crucial time for the planet and cohesive existence, and it’s about acting now and being unafraid to be yourself. I am a non-binary person, I am hella in touch with my female energy and she’s a big part of my life, I wish more humans would be open to that idea, or freedom within yourself, it would completely remove discrimination based on sexuality or gender.
In three words how would you describe the concept of Poems To Fuck To?
Raw. Manifesto. Emotive.
Dopamine is a track about finding yourself and in turn, through group consciousness finding world peace. How has your own journey of self-actualisation helped you contribute to a prosperous society?
The way I see it is that the world and every human being on the planet is evolving. We are actually naturally inclined to do the right thing. Systemic abuse of the global population by a small minority of psychopaths has resulted in a very dark way of living. Animal agriculture needs to be removed completely from society. It is unnatural, violent, poisonous and outrageous that it has reached the level that it is at, destroying the planet and human bodies simultaneously. A vegan future is the only viable future in order for us to feed the hungry, generate better karma for the masses and remove the insidious levels of pollution caused by cognitive dissonance and taste bud manipulation. It will happen, imminently. My own journey is unique, because I didn’t necessarily expect to be in this position, to have a voice and all I know is that if I am living my truth, then I need to be honest about how I feel and do what I can to raise the vibration of this planet.
“We have corrupt, cheating, unelected leaders in the UK, US, Brazil, Russia and so many more countries. We have to be more vocal. We have to be more present.”
IRL what boosts your dopamine?
Meditation, dancing, making music, weed, cuddling my puppy, “10,” fragrance, giving, healing, technology, art, sex, vegetables, fruit, hiking and so much more…
Relative to your success as artist NEO 10Y you’re quite fresh to the music industry. Since your first release in 2016, how do you think your music has evolved?
Definitely fresh! I started making songs for me, in secret, I didn’t expect to be doing this two years later, let alone releasing a song about world peace that actually slaps so hard. I am humbled and honoured but at the same time, I have been busting my ass for 16 hours a day, evolving and working on my craft. I’m also making songs now for an audience, instead of just myself and that alone has improved the quality of my work.
Poems To Fuck To has a raw, organic and unpolished mood to it. What prompted this sound and who did you have in mind when writing the track?
You know the song has no BPM. I played the guitar and recorded it via an amp in the other room at the same time as recording the vocals in the booth. I like the industrial feel on most of my songs, I just wanted something raw, no vocal edits, just me, my soul and what I stand for. It’s a side of me that no-one really sees or has heard before and I wanted it to feel like that. It’s a b-side in the traditional sense, but it’s funny, because from tests, both tracks fair as the favourite pretty equally. I know a lot of my friends wanted to hear that raw side of me and I wanted a song that described who I am and what I make.
Following the atrocious and maybe not so shocking confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court and with the up and coming midterm elections, how important is it for vanguard queer artists such as yourself and the general public to continue to make noise?
It’s unbelievable that he has been confirmed, but it’s also very clear that the people are not in control. We have corrupt, cheating, unelected leaders in the UK, US, Brazil, Russia and so many more countries. We have to be more vocal. We have to be more present. I am worried that the victim narrative from a lot of LGBT+ artists and celebrities is really dangerous and actually resulting in a generation of kids going back into the closet. We have to be ourselves and unapologetic and be heroes for the community and kids. Queer is the new normal.
