SKY TING YOGA

SKY TING YOGA

“We want our community to use SKY TING as a platform to educate and promote change.” Krissy Jones of SKY TING YOGA on leveraging women in sport. The Co-Founder discusses the importance of SKY TING in building community self care spaces, YOGA vs SEX positions and reveals the “unofficial pick up spot” where you might just end up spending more time than doing downward facing dogs.

YOUTH and ROLE MODELS

If your life was a 90s movie which one would it be?

Clueless.

If you were to print a female role model on your yoga mat, who would it be and why?

Amal Clooney for her humanitarian work and being my style icon.

At the US Open Serena Williams called out sexism, raising global awareness of discrimination in sport. What role do you see Sky Ting having in leveraging women in this conversation?

Our teachers aren’t afraid to bring up topics like this in class and create awareness within the community. We’ve always been more than just a yoga studio. We host panel discussions, fundraisers, charity events and we love bringing people together to discuss important topics. We want our community to use SKY TING as a platform to educate and promote change. I think with this issue on sexism in sport, our role is to continue to provide a safe space for people to come together to think, converse and inspire.

Who would be your pipe dream student to walk through the Sky Ting Yoga doors?

Drake!!!

“The unofficial pick up spot is definitely the conversation pit!”

SKY TING YOGA

Are you a RuPaul’s Drag Race fan and if so which past contestant would make the best yoga teacher at Sky Ting?

I don’t watch any TV but I know I would love RuPaul’s Drag Race.

A Sky Ting Yoga story that warms your heart?

My two friends meeting in our teacher training program and falling in love.

Sky Ting Yoga has a strong queer following. Why do you think this is and where would be the best Sky Ting Yoga unofficial pick up spot: the infrared sauna, the lounge pit or in class…?

I think since we’re such a design heavy studio we attract more queer and artistic people. People who want to practice in a beautiful place. We’re also quite welcoming – our method is accessible and not dogmatic. The unofficial pick up spot is definitely the conversation pit! It’s cozy and you’re encouraged to meet people pre and post class 🙂

The best pose to start the day with?

Down Dog – a classic.

Sky Ting has created more than a yoga studio, rather a community. What role do you think sport culture has in building communities?

I think people would much rather meet people in a yoga studio than a bar these days. Wellness is becoming such a big thing right now because it’s a necessary part of your life if you live in a high-paced, high-tech city like NYC. Also, people crave community and need to feel part of something for their health! SKY TING provides that for people, it’s a beautiful thing.

Yoga Pose or Sex Position?

Bound Lotus – YOGA

The Glowing Juniper – SEX

Plow Pose – BOTH
