The North Carolina General Assembly has overridden Governor Roy Cooper’s veto of the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, which bans transgender girls and women from participating in women’s sports at middle school, high school, and college levels. The House passed the bill with a vote of 74-45. Another bill, HB 808, was also overridden; it prohibits medical professionals from providing hormone therapy or gender-transition procedures to anyone under 18. Additionally, SB 49 or the “Parents Bill of Rights,” requiring teachers to inform parents if students question their gender or choose different pronouns in class, was also overridden. These bills are now law and will take effect immediately.
